Earlier this month the auction house C Gars Ltd from London in the United Kingdom held an online auction featuring over 300 lots of vintage Cuban cigars. The online auction featured several rare contributions including limited editions and long discontinued brands dating back to the Cuban embargo.
The item that sold for the most was a cabinet of 500 pre-embargo Punch Corona cigars with a high bid of £40,500, or about $52,000 in U.S. currency.
C Gars Ltd managing director Mitchell Orchant stated that he believes the feeble state of the British currency played a role in the high bidding. At one point during the online auction there was over 500 bidders vying for these rare beauties with several coming from cigar connoisseurs in Asia.
There were other bids worthy of mentioning too, including a Partagás 165th Anniversary Humidor where the top bidder came in at $12,859. There was a cabinet of 100 Por Larrañaga Coronations Miniature cigars with a winning bid of $8,403. Another cabinet of 50 Davidoff Chateau Yquem corona cigars went for 48,021 and one more bid for 60 Dunhill Special Seleccion no. 415 topped out at $7,766.
This most recent online auction was held in June of 2017. C Gars Ltd is expecting two more vintage Cuban cigar auctions later this year in September and November.
