I’m not just talking about drinking coffee while you light up your favorite cigar. I’m mainly talking about coffee-infused cigars!
It’s a hard fact that Americans love their coffee, so much so that having a cup of coffee in the morning has become a tradition for more than 30% of the United States population. This widespread love for coffee is what has made companies like Starbucks become billion-dollar enterprises!
It’s also not a surprise that coffee is the favorite drink of most cigar smokers, and among them is a group of coffee-drinking cigar smokers who have acquired a preference for smoking coffee-infused cigars.
One thing about coffee is that it’s not only the caffeine content that gives its drinkers an energy boost, but also the aroma. I know that my favorite thing about my early-morning coffee is the heavenly aroma- that’s where I begin to get my energy boost. There’s truly nothing like the aroma of some good coffee, or in this case, a good coffee-infused cigar. It has the dual-purpose nature of both giving you a much-needed shot in the arm and relaxing you if that’s what you need.
Take note that there is a big difference between coffee-infused cigars and coffee-flavored cigars- which I will expand on later in this text. In the past, there were hardly any good-quality coffee-infused cigars in the stores. However, today you will find them in large varieties that you can pick and choose from, especially if you are someone with premium tastes when it comes to your smokes.
Below I will highlight 5 of the best coffee-infused cigar brands that exist in this day. Even if you’re a stickler for a certain type or brand of cigars, this will give you an idea of some cigars that might just be for you too, especially if you’re a coffee lover.
1. JAVA by Drew Estate Cigars.
The Drew Estate story is a very inspirational one, but today, it is one of the most well-loved and best-selling cigar brands in the market. Drew Estate Cigars specializes heavily in crafting infused cigar blends, and they started in this trade with their ACID cigars in the year 2000.
The original JAVA cigars were released in 2004 as a collaboration between Rocky Patel and Drew Estate under the name “Rocky Patel JAVA by Drew Estate.” Being one of the only premium-quality, coffee-infused cigars available at the time, it took off like a rocket and continues to be a perpetual bestseller.
All JAVA cigars have sweetened caps and are very compact with well-balanced blends of Nicaraguan long-fillers in Brazilian Mata Fina wrappers. They taste sweet, which is no surprise because they are light to medium-bodied cigars with hints of earthy spices and best of all, an appealing java aroma.
JAVA Latte: Following the success of JAVA cigars, Drew Estate came out with their JAVA Latte cigars for smokers who desire a coffee-infused cigar that is lighter in flavor but just as aromatic. The central Nicaraguan blend is practically the same as the original but these are wrapped in Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrappers that are milder than the Mata Fina. The cigar is well-balanced, creamy, and smooth, with a hint of spice, and a syrupy mocha scent.
JAVA Mint: Just like mint chocolate, mint coffee is a phenomenon that a lot of people find difficult to accept when they first hear of it. But trust me when I say that these are surprisingly so tasty! They are medium-bodied cigars with all-Nicaraguan fillers wrapped in naturally sweet Brazilian Maduro wrappers, supplying a more intricate smoke with its chocolate mint flavoring and mocha aroma.
2. Tabak Especial Cigars
Another one of the Drew Estate frat brothers’ masterpieces, these are yet another line of coffee-infused cigars crafted for the coffee aficionado, and Drew Estate went all out on these too!
Jonathan Drew, the co-founder of Drew Estate, sheds some light on this line of cigars, saying, “Tabak Especial is a really special cigar that I worked on for over five years. Using the very finest Nicaraguan tobaccos and Nicaragua estate-grown coffee, Tabak Especial is truly a work of art that will appeal to even the most die-hard traditionalist.”
This line has been handcrafted by the brand in two variants: Tabak Especial Dulce, and Tabak Especial Maduro Negra.
Tabak Especial Dulce: This is a medium-bodied cigar encased in a sweet-capped Connecticut Shade wrapper.
Tabak Especial Maduro Negra: this variant is more full-bodied, rolled in a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.
The core tobaccos in the Tabak Especial cigars are Nicaraguan Criollo rolled in a spicy Sumatra leaf, giving medium, to full-bodied cigars an earthy Nicaraguan flavor profile with an authentic espresso fragrance.
3. Nub Café Cigars
As one of the most impressive cigar brands out there in the market, Oliva Cigars has continually wowed its patrons with the amazing quality of cigars they produce. Based in Estelí, Nicaragua, the brand made a brave release of its Nub line of cigars in 2008. The Nub Café cigars come in the ranges of Cappuccino, Espresso, and Macchiato, and offer a luxurious coffee aroma and flavor note.
The cigars are short, medium to full-bodied, and quite similar to the traditionally blended Oliva Nub cigars. Here are the three handmade selections of Nub Café cigars, blended with Dominican tobaccos and rolled in Ecuadorian Connecticut and Sumatra wrappers.
Nub Café Cappuccino: The Cappuccino line consists of a burnt gold Connecticut Shade wrapper with an uber-smooth and creamy texture, plus a mild coffee fragrance enriched with notes of cedar and vanilla.
Nub Café Espresso: The Espresso is rolled in a richly dark Sumatra wrapper which gives this cigar a spicy edge. The smoke is extremely smooth, incorporating notes of coffee beans, cocoa, and sweet tobacco with a soothing mocha-java aroma.
Nub Café Macchiato: In the Macchiato line, a milder, Colorado-hued Sumatra wrapper is what sheaths the cigars. It is a medium to full-bodied smoke with creamy flavors of cedar, spice, and chocolate, rounded out by a lush coffee fragrance.
4. Maroma Café Cigars
Many people ask the question, “Is it possible to get a high-quality premium coffee-infused cigar that isn’t so expensive?” Well, the answer to that question is yes, you can. Or rather, the real answer is Maroma Café cigars. Maroma offers this low-cost range of handmade coffee-infused cigars with cores that are mild, mixed-filler, and contain Cuban sandwich tobacco.
These cigars are light smokes with amazing coffee aromas that make them perfect to pair with a cup of just-the-way-you-like-it coffee in the early hours of the morning.
Maroma Café Breve: Encased in Honduran-grown Connecticut-seed wrappers with sweetened caps, this cigar offers a light smoke with a cappuccino-like fragrance.
Maroma Café Espresso: Rolled in Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrappers, also with sweetened caps, the smoke in this cigar is also mild with a slightly more robust tobacco flavor, and of course, complemented by a dark roasted coffee aroma
5. Isla Del Sol
Drew Estate went out to dominate the world of coffee-infused cigars. Their Isla Del Sol is a handcrafted blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos infused with Sumatra Mandheling bean coffee and encased in sun-grown Sumatra wrappers. Covered with a sweetened tip, the cigar smoke is mild, smooth, and carries a rich, lovely coffee aroma.
A big plus of the Isla Del Sol cigars is that they are very affordable. The Isla Del Sol cigars are the perfect introduction to the world of coffee-infused cigars.
And so these are just a few recommendations if taking a break from traditionally blended cigars is something you’re giving some thought to.
Now I will explain the difference between a flavored cigar and an infused cigar using an illustration of barbecue ribs. An infused cigar possesses a profile similar to the taste you will get when you smoke your ribs. It is primarily aromatic because whatever extra element is being added to the cigar is incorporated by passive absorption. This could happen in several ways; for example, by burning or diffusing scents into the tobacco leaves while they are being cured.
Meanwhile, a flavored cigar has a similar profile to what you would get if you glaze your ribs with a nice barbecue sauce. A flavored cigar can be obtained through means such as coating flavor onto the wrapper of the cigar.
Infused cigars are the mid-point between traditionally blended cigars and flavored cigars, so they’re perfect for you if you’re biased towards traditional cigars and not looking to stray too far from them, as well as if you’re more of a flavored cigar fan looking for something new but not too overwhelming to try.
You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy cigars-infused coffee, and those are all the same thing! So why not try a coffee-infused cigar today?
